Values and decision making

Values and decision making

This post is about a conversation that I had with one of my clients.

He knew that he would be working in the current job for another six to eight months only as he was applying for his Masters. Also, he loves his job and has a great equation with his manager.

His dilemma was, whether he should let his office and more particularly his manager know about his plans right away or wait till his Masters application process gets completed in about six months. His worry was about the kind of projects / work that may get assigned to him, if his office /manager comes to know that he is available for a shorter time. He may get only support projects and not some mid or long-term development projects like the ones he is getting now.

After a few minutes into the conversation, I sought his permission to share an observation and said “to me it looks like there is a value clash here”. What values are getting impacted when you are deciding about this?

After a few seconds of silence, the client said “Honesty”. I like to be honest about my intentions. And secondly, it’s about the “Relationship” that I have with my manager.

At this point, it was easy for the him to decide that he is indeed going to let his manager and his office know about his plans right away. And, accept whatever work comes his way until his last working day.

BTW, how important are our core values in making decisions and choosing directions?
