Leadership Behaviors Takeaway from the Movie "Intern"

I watched the movie “Intern” on Netflix – A witty and feel-good movie Seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Nero), a retired executive, applies to fill the newly conceived position of senior intern, as post retirement life has become too boring for him. He applies to About The Fit, a fast-growing e-commerce fashion start-up in Brooklyn. Founder and CEO Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) had previously agreed to a community outreach program where seniors would intern at the firm. Ben impresses everyone and is one of four hired. These are my top leadership behaviours takeaway from the movie: Have Faith in yourself, your dreams and goals: Even though Jules’ has achieved her five-year-goals in 18 months, the investors are sceptical about her ability to scale and recommend hiring a CEO. She learns that no person is better than her to ensure that her dreams for the company are achieved. It’s always possible to acquire new skills and competences: Ben is a 70-year-old retiree who is zestful and is always exploring new things. He embraces new technology which does not scare him. His younger colleagues teach him how to use a computer and his grandson explains to him the meaning of a USB. Be Accessible to Team: Jules sits at a work location on the floor with other colleagues. Her work place is visible to all and she talks to anyone who approaches her. This helps her become aware of the grassroots level issues and connect with her team extremely well. Do not Underestimate People: Initially, Jules is not very sure about Ben. But slowly understands the value he brings in and starts depending on him a lot. She even confides in him about her personal challenges. It’s important to trust your team: Jules trusts Ben and team to even enter her mother's house to check her computer and delete an embarrassing email that she sent by accident. Celebrate small successes of team members: When Ben cleans up a work table that has been messy for far too long, the whole office celebrates by ringing a bell and acknowledging him for the act. Help others succeed: Matt, (Jules’s husband) even though is more successful, and a rising star agrees to be the home maker and supports Jules pursue her dreams of a huge career. Be humble: Ben is extremely humble as a learner. At the same time, he offers to help others with things that he knows better with great deal of humility. He even takes up the role of Jules’s driver after he finds the driver drinking during work hours. Jules on her part is happy to accept her mistake of moving Ben to a different role and requests him to come back as part of her team and even moves his work location closer to her own.
